The Refugee Leadership Training class held their graduation on May 24, 2017 at SLCC South City Campus. There were more than 40 graduates representing over 14 countries and communities from the Middle East, Africa, and Haiti, now living in Utah. The program featured traditional African Burundi Drummers, a panel with 6 refugees, and a speech from Clifton Sanders PhD, SLCC Provost of Academic Affairs. The ceremony was followed by a traditional African meal provided by Mama Africa.

The Refugee Leadership Training program is a 40-hour training designed to teach and instill confidence in refugees from around the world, to become leaders and spokespersons for their communities. The program is a part of an ongoing community outreach from SLCC in partnership with American Express, the Utah Refugee Education and Training Center, and the Dept. of Workforce Services.

The theme of the graduation comes from an African Proverb that says “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”
